How to Make Easy Pilgrim Hat Cookies

I love to do little crafts and make treats around any holiday. Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that tends to get overlooked, so I like to be sure to celebrate it with my kids and help them understand why we celebrate Thanksgiving. Tonight we’ll be watching Peanuts, “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”, and we’ll probably also watch, “This is America Charlie Brown: The Mayflower Voyagers”. I thought I’d make these little Pilgrim themed cookie treats with them to go with our movie night.

Here is what you’ll need to make Pilgrim Hat Cookies.

My boys have allergies, so it’s hard to find “normal” treats they can eat that are fun. I’m always so excited when I can find something special they can have or if I’m able to make adjustments. Most people use Keebler Fudge Stripes Cookies to make these Pilgrim Hats. My son with an egg allergy can eat those, but I had to find something different for my son with a gluten allergy. We used Kinnikinnick GF K-TOOS Chocolate Creme Filled Sandwich Cookies. You can find these on Amazon by clicking the highlighted link. Enjoy Life Chocolate Chip Cookies would work for kids with any of the top 8 allergies.

Supplies you will need:

Keebler Fudge Stripes Cookies, or an allergy-friendly cookie (We used K-Toos GF Chocolate Creme Filled Sandwich Cookies, Enjoy Life Chocolate Chip Cookies would work too, and they are free of the top 8 allergens.)
1/2 cup of chocolate chips. We used Artisan Kettle Organic Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips. If you have a dairy allergy, use Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips.
1 bag of large Kraft Marshmallows
yellow M&Ms, which we found in their leftover Halloween candy
a splash of milk or half and half or any milk substitute
parchment paper, aluminum foil or waxed paper to put your cookies on to dry
Toothpicks or chopsticks

Directions:

First, I added the chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl and added a splash of half and half cream.
I microwaved it at 20-second intervals stirring in between. It only took 2- 20-second intervals to melt our chocolate chips.
Next, we placed the cookies on parchment paper, which I put on each of my sons’ plates. For the Keebler Stripes Cookies, place them on the plate upside-down.
Next, we stuck our large marshmallows on chopsticks and dipped them in the melted chocolate and twirled them around until they were covered with chocolate. We used a teaspoon to cover the top of the marshmallow with chocolate.
Then, we placed the chocolate covered marshmallows on top of each of their cookies.
Next, we put a yellow M&M on each one of the Pilgrim Hat cookies
We let the chocolate dry, and then each boy was able to try one.

My boys loved making and eating these Pilgrim Hat cookies. I think it helps them to be more interested in the story of the first Thanksgiving. I love hands-on activities for children that help to make parts of history more real to them.
